About the Project

LAUSD is committed to implementing a new self-service approach to ad hoc reporting for MiSiS, MyData, and Welligent users. This approach empowers central office, local district, and school administrators to easily access, create, and share reports to support data-driven initiatives. The new approach requires replacing the existing ad hoc reporting capability, MiSiS Explorer, with a more robust ad hoc reporting tool – Oracle Business Intelligence Foundation Suite – which enables end users to create personalized reports with minimal or no IT involvement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why is LAUSD switching to the new Ad Hoc Reporting tool?
A. LAUSD is making the switch to provide a self-service approach to producing reports and data extracts that LAUSD school, local district, and central office staff can use in data-driven initiatives. There are limitations in MiSiS Explorer, which the new ad hoc reporting tool will address, such as limited historical data, lack of dashboard capability, and inability to extract data for multiple schools, to name a few. MiSiS Ad Hoc Reporting and Dashboards also provides more data to choose from than the old MiSiS Explorer and SIS systems, providing greater flexibility in creating reports.

Q. What are the benefits of this project?
A. Implementing the new ad hoc reporting tool will improve the experience of generating reports using data found in MiSiS. Some of the major benefits include:
  • Flexibility – Provides more flexibility in MiSiS ad hoc reporting, now allowing users to create reports at the local district and LAUSD levels if they have access to that data.
  • Self-Service Approach – Eliminates the need to request new reports to be created by IT – users can create and personalize their own reports.
  • Dashboards – Provides dashboards to various types of users (administrators, central office staff, school officials, etc.) consisting of the information those users need to have to succeed.
  • Historical Data – Provides the ability to produce reports on historical student data, so users can look at information on a student’s previous enrollment and course history.
  • Up-to-Date Data – Data will be updated nightly; some data, such as attendance and scheduling, will be available in real-time.

Q. What is ad hoc reporting?
A. Ad hoc reporting is a method of creating reports in which users can select the data and format of a report to fit their needs. This method of reporting does not require a developer to take the time to build a report. In MiSiS Ad Hoc Reporting, the user selects the data for a report from a subject area and then formats the report in a way that best presents the information.

Q. How does the tool work?
A. MiSiS Ad Hoc Reporting and Dashboards consists of two major capabilities: dashboards and ad hoc reporting.

A dashboard is a collection of related reports that are displayed together on one page. Each dashboard provides a snapshot of information on a specific subject, such as Norm Day Enrollment or English Learner. When users log in, they immediately see a Dashboard populated with central office, local district, or school-level data, depending on the user's role in LAUSD.

Ad hoc reporting provides users with the ability to create and share their own reports. This method of reporting does not require a developer to take the time to build a report. Users can also select a canned template report from the Catalog. Canned template reports are created and shared by other ad hoc reporting users. Note that only designated Super Users are able to save report to the Catalog to share with other users.
